Description
The Overseas Highway is the 113 mile roadway (Part of U.S. Route 1) through the Florida Keys. Major portions were built on the former right-of-way of the Overseas Railroad (the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Rail system finished in 1912 and virtually destroyed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935). The State purchased the system and rebuilt this magnificent highway from Miami to Key West thru some fantastic natural environments seen nowhere else in America, although the Miami Motor Club had conceived this idea in the early 1920’s.
