Description

Pope John Paul II (the first non – Italian Pope in more than 450 years), was born in Poland in 1920 and during his 60th Birthday year, the Pope undertook his first visit to Germany in honor of the 700th death Anniversary (November 1280 in Koln) of St. Albert the Great (Patron Saint of the Scientists).

Here is a (3.7 ounces or 104 gram) base metal medallion (measuring 2 & 3/8th inches or 6 centimeters across) issued for the Papal visit. On one side – a portrait of the Pope and the othe shows the 18th Century Cathedral at Fulda (site of his visit 17 – 18 November, 1980). The year date is also significant in that it was in large part due to St. Sturm (died 780) that the Monastery at Fulda flourished.
